IGK was established on March 1, 2003 and is located close to all amenities such as shopping, transportation, wineries, orchards and beaches. Kelowna is easily accessible by air and bus from Vancouver , Victoria , Calgary , Edmonton , Toronto and Seattle . The population of Kelowna is 100,000 and living costs are much lower than in many other Canadian cities.

My husband and I have over 20 years experience in the ESL industry both as educators and as administrators and we are very knowledgeable about what international students are looking for with regards to programs, accommodation, activities and study environment. IGK staff and teachers focus on the following key points:

Homestays

The IGK homestay coordinator has carefully arrange d your Homestay placement based on your initial requests. Please don't hesitate to talk to them or to your homestay family if you have any questions or concerns during your stay. The IGK homestay coordinator can also suggest hotel, motel, B+B and hostel options.

An IGK staff member will greet you at the Kelowna International Airport or the Kelowna Greyhound Bus Station if you arranged a transfer. Then you will be transferred to the school and given a brief orientation on Kelowna and IGK before being introduced to your host family.

First Day of Class

Your homestay family will assist you with taking the public bus to school on your first day. The bus fare is $1.75 one way (exact change) and a monthly bus pass is available for $38-$47 depending on your age. Your homestay will assist you with purchasing a bus pass if requested or you can purchase one at various locations around the city including Kelowna City Hall . Classes begin daily at 9:00am and you should arrive by 8:45am on the first day with a pen and paper. All learning materials are provided free of charge during your stay. You will be given a brief placement test and interview (9:00-10: 15am) and after that you will go on a guided walking tour of downtown Kelowna (post office, banks, shops, waterfront, museums) from (10:30-12:00). Lunch is from 12:00-12:45 . In the afternoon you will be placed in the appropriate level and class.

You will be placed in a class based on your placement test score. It is strongly advised that you stay in the assigned level for at least 4 weeks to maximize your learning before moving up to the next level. Please discuss this matter with your teacher and they will be happy to assist you. You can expect to receive approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour of homework each evening. There will also be weekly quizzes and oral evaluations to monitor your progress.

Classes

AM- Monday-Friday 9:00am - 12:00 noon (Break 10:15-10:30 )

Morning classes feature Practical ESL (listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar) using Headway and Canadian Concepts as the main texts.

Lunch 12:00-12:45

PM- Monday-Friday 12:45pm-2:55pm (Break 2:00-2:10 )

Afternoon classes feature a selection of electives depending on your level.

Cambridge FCE, TOEFL , TOEIC, Media, Canadian Culture, Media, Pronunciation and Conversation are a few of the most popular electives at IGK. Not all classes or electives are offered at one time. IGK requires a minimum of 3 students registered in each elective class. Please ask for details.

IGK is a Cambridge Testing Centre with exams held n December, April and June

IGK is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm Students can access the Internet free of charge at the school before or after class , during lunch or break time . Students can also access the Internet free of charge at any Kelowna public library (library card required).

IGK offers an exciting selection of weekly activities like movie and dance nights, attending hockey, lacrosse, baseball or football matches, horseback riding, golf, swimming, wine tasting etc. Kelowna is a resort city so it is easy to get involved in community sports, clubs and events. Big White Crystal Mountain and Silverstar Ski resorts offer world class skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, dog sledding and snowmobiling from December-March and are easily accessible from Kelowna!.
