Odessa State Environmental University (ODEKU)

The Odessa State Environmental University (ODEKU) attached to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Ukraine was founded on May 1st, 1932 in the city of Kharkiv, the former capital of the Ukraine, as the Kharkiv Engineering Hydrometeorological Institute. In July, 1944 by the Decree of the Soviet Government the Institute was transferred to Odessa. For 70 years of its existence the higher educational establishment has been developing two basic trends. On the one part, a trend associated with training of engineers in the field of Hydrometeorology and Monitoring of the Environment which has been developed historically. On the other part, the specific character of the Hydrometeorological trend in training of specialists provided a solid personnel, method and scientific research basis for organizing a system of environmental education at the University.

At present the ODEKU is the national educational centre of the IV level of accreditation which trains specialists of higher education in the field of Hydrometeorology, Monitoring of the Environment, Environmental Science and Organisation of Environmental Control.

The six departments of the University:

Hydrometeorological Institute,
The Department of Environmental Science,
The Department of Computer Science and Management, as well as
the Preparatory Department,
the Department of Extra-Mural Study,
the Department of Probation and Retraining

provide training of specialists in four basic courses:

- Hydrometeorolog y
(specialities: Meteorology, Hydrology and Hydrochemistry, Oceanography, Hydrography, Agrometeorology)

- Environmental Science
(specialities: Organisation of Environmental Control, Frontier Environmental Control, Radioecology, Hydroecolgy, Legal Aspects of Environmental Control, Ecology of Recreation and Resorts)

- Computer Science
(specialties: Information Management Systems and Technologies, Geoinformation Systems and Technologies)

- Management
(Business Management, Management of Environmental Control)

Graduates of the University are given assignments to various jobs at the Hydrometeorological Service, regional structures of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Ukraine, the Ministry of the Ukraine in Extraordinary Situations and Protection of the Population against the Consequences of the Chernobyl Disaster, the State Committee of Water Industry of the Ukraine, the Ukrainian Antarctic Centre, The Hail-Suppression Service of the Ukraine, other ministries and departments.

Since 1992 training of regular specialists in Hydrometeorology for the Ministry of Defence and the Security Service of the Ukraine has been carried out at the University.

In the field of Hydrometeorology the ODEKU has been training specialists for the World Meteorological Organisation, being a special agency of the UNO, for some 50 years. Training of specialists in this field fully meets the international standards and is acknowledged by all hydrometeorological services of the world.

The Odessa State Environmental University has one of the best material and technical bases, as well as one of the most highly qualified teaching staff in the region.

Two scientific research and training complexes are established on the basis of the University — The Ukrainan Centre for Hydrometeorological Education and the Centre for Environmental Education as well as the Southern Regional Branch of the State Institute of Probation and Retraining attached to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Ukraine. Creation of a training centre for the Ministry of Defence of the Ukraine on the basis of the University is under way.

The University has been extensively developed and looks ahead with perfect confidence.

Hydrometeorological Institute

Training is provided in the field of Meteorology, Agrometeorology, Hydrology and Hydrochemistry, Oceanography and Hydrography.

Within the domain of Meteorology as a speciality there exist the following specializations:

Weather Forecasting (Metcasting),
Aeronautical Meteorology,
Climatology,
Experimental Meteorology.
Since 1999 the department has been giving training for the students in the field of Polar Meteorology.

From the third year of study on the students of Hydrology are given the opportunity to specialize in Complex Water Management, Water Conservation and Institutional basics of Water Industry.

Department of Environmental Science

provides training of researchers, experts, inspectors for organisations and offices engafed in environmental control, scientific research centres, manufacturing enterprises, regional departments of environmental control and regional government administrations. Since 2000 specialists in the field of Legal Aspects of Environmental Control, Ecology of Recreation and Resorts as well as Environmental (Responsible) Tourism have been given training.

Department of Computer Science and Management

provides training of specialists in two fields: Computer Science and Management. Specialists in the field of Information Technology work up and develop components of data processing and project management systems, specific software and geoinformation systems. Training of managers is given with due consideration to the environmental description of the University.

Sub-faculty of Military Training

A programme for training of regular hydrometeorology officers for the Ukrainian Army, Navy and Air Force has been carried out at the Sub-faculty of Military Training. The students who are given training in civil specialities at the University are provided Senior Division Programme.

All the examinations are administered in the written form and meet the level of Certificate of Secondary Education. Entrans who graduated from school with distinction (awarded with medals) are taken in by results of an interview.

The term of study comprises respectively:

Bachelor of Science — 4 years
Specialist — 5 years
Master of Science — 5-6 years

Extra-Mural Entrants

The Odessa State Environmental University provides extra-mural instruction in the following fields, specialities and specializations:

Entrance exams are conducted in the form of comprehensive testing. Entrans who graduated from school with distinction (awarded with medals) are taken in by results of an interview. The term of study comprises 6 years.

TO APPLY FOR THE UNIVERSITY YOU SHOULD SUPPLY

Before then student come to Ukraine , he must send for dean:
1. Passport copy;
2. A copy of the document of education;
3. Born certificate copy;
4. Application to rector, what student want study in Cherkassy State technological university.

Documents:
1. the questionnaire;
2. a copy of the document of education with the list of studied courses (subjects) and received grades (points) – with notary public;
3. the document evidencing the absence HIV-infection;
4. the medical certificate of the state of health certified by an official health care authority of a country, where a foreigner has come from, and issued at least two months prior the entrance into Ukraine for education - with notary public;
5. a copy of the certificate of birth - with notary public;
6. 10 photographs having the size of 3x4;
7. Air ticket (which finish after one year).

Invitation costs 100$US
Visa Support Letter costs 100$US (we send invitation along with photo copy of Visa Support Letter to student. While Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine sends Visa Support Letter or Confirmation Letter in Ukrainian Embassy in the country of Student. This letter guarantees the VISA)
Insurance costs 100$US (insurance is paid in Embassy of Ukraine)
Hostel costs 300$US for one year (paid in Ukraine )
